The Angel in print…
25th July 2022
Head Chef Elly Wentworth was certainly impressed when talented illustrator Angela of Quayscape called in to see her at the Angel Restaurant earlier this year. Her exquisite drawing of the building was so well done, Elly even changed the profile pictures on the social media platforms for the restaurant, to the illustration!
Needless to say, the original is now framed and in pride of place next to the kitchen in the Angel.
We found out a bit more about Angela…she said:
‘Buildings fascinate me. When I was child, every historical building was the setting where fantasy characters played out a fairy story. Whenever I walk around a town, my eyes are drawn upwards to the architecture above shops, and I wonder who has lived there and what businesses they managed. Later when I went to art college I explored and painted many of the buildings around in Torbay’s harbours and Dartmouth’s historical streets. I sold an ink sketch to the owner of the Harbour Light Restaurant in Paignton and was amazed to see it still featured on their menus for over 20 years later. So many of the buildings I drew back then are unrecognisable today but it’s good to know that some remain the same. My watercolour of The Cherub in Dartmouth shows that it has hardly changed over the decades.
A career in education didn’t leave much free time for painting, so I always packed a sketchbook and a few paints in my luggage when I travelled. I loved to paint the colourful crumbling facades of buildings in Italy, gulets (Turkish wooden boats) and yachts in the Med. I sketched every fish I caught whilst snorkelling, and even drew the plates of paella I enjoyed!
I now work full time as an illustrator. I love working to commission as it’s a really great way to collaborate with clients and understand the history and importance of the building. My style of illustration focusses on precise detail and accuracy so the initial drafting of a sketch is a slow and very careful process, but I love the moment the drawing comes alive with detail and colour.
I am so pleased Elly liked my work and super proud it is on display in such a prestigious restaurant in Dartmouth.”
